Week 3 Discussion Question

Ha and her family decide to leave Saigon once the President is no longer in power. Their journey has now just begun. Their mother informs them in 'Choice' that "Into each pack: one pair of pants, one pair of shorts, three pairs of underwear, two shirts, sandals, toothbrush and paste, soap, ten palms of rice grains, three clumps of cooked rice, one choice." This means that they must leave everything else, essentially the only life they have ever known behind. For her 'choice' item Ha chooses her doll, what item would you choose? If you had to leave your life behind what would be the hardest things to leave behind? Make sure to explain your choices and give specific details. This thinking will help you better relate to what Ha is going through!

Make sure to write in complete sentences and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. 1. The item I would choose is my yellow blanket that I’ve had since I was a baby. I’d choose this because it is my favorite and it has a lot of memories. Another reason I would choose it is because it could keep me warm while I’m on the ship.

    2. One thing that would be hard to leave behind is your friends, this would be hard to leave behind because their the people you can trust, their the people that you’ve told everything to. Friends would also be hard to leave behind because they're your friends who have gone through a lot of things with and their people that you're really close with. Another thing that would be hard to leave behind is your house, this would be hard to leave behind because you've made a lot of memories in it, and your use to it. It’s the place that you love. The last thing that would be hard to leave behind would be your city, this would be a hard thing to leave behind because you know where everything is and its where probably all your family and friends live.

    1. I agree that it would be very hard to leave your friends behind because you have made so many memories together and have had so many great times together. In the chapter Titi waves goodbye, Ha was so sad because Titi was leaving on a cruise ship and it doesn't seem like a big deal to you but if you actually experienced it then it would be sad.

  2. If I had to leave Vietnam like that I would take my dog Chuck. I would take my dog because I wouldn’t want him to get killed by soldiers. If I had to leave my life behind like that I think that the hardest thing would be my extended family. This would be the hardest thing because I wouldn’t know if they are safe or dead. Also because I love them and it would stink to have them be dead. They would also be the hardest thing to leave because I wouldn’t be able to see them unless they came with.

  3. If I had to leave my life behind the hardest thing I would leave behind is my pets, especially my cat he always help me through hard times like when i am sad he comes and sits by me then he comes up and gives me the met nose. My other pet, a hamster always cheers me up by crawling around on my arm. Those would all be really hard for me to let go. The one thing I was aloud to bring Would be somthing I got as a baby. My favorite two stuffed animals a Teddy bear and a stuffed kitty. These are my two of my prized possession I could never leave them behind, they cheer me up and have a lot of sentimental value. That is what I would bring and have to leave.

  4. The item that I would choose is my tablet because I don’t want to miss out on all of the fun games and the shows on it and the educational games on it too. If I had to my life behind some of the hardest things I would probably leave behind would be my stuffed animals, some of my books, a little bit of my artwork, a tiny bit of my special things, some of my hats, and some of my prized possessions that I love and will never forget. I would never leave those things behind but I would have to make a choice about that.

    1. Rory, I think your post is great! I think it’s great because it’s exactly what Miss. Wyman needed, she needed one thing you would want to bring with you and what you would miss when you had to leave your home. Which you all did! I also like your post because its you, you like hats, artwork, and books. Oh and I never thought of bringing my tablet great idea! Great job!

  5. In the book Inside Out and Back Again Ha had to leave everything behind except for one thing, she chose her doll. If I had to choose I would choose my stuffed animal bear, Row, because she is my favorite stuffed animal. I would also bring her because I got her from my birthday 5 years ago, so she is very special to me. I think she is the best stuffed animal I have when it comes to no rips or tares either. She probably would not fall apart on the boat with all the swishing and grabbing. That would probably be the best personal thing to bring.

I have lots of other very clothes things that I would want to bring, but I would have to leave behind though. One of the things I would have to leave behind is three necklace that I got from my dad; he lives in Florida, so that is very special to me too. Another thing that I would be hard to leave behind is my other stuffed animals I have had for a long time and that are also very special to me. I would also want to bring something fun to play with on the boat, like a game. As you can see I would probably Not want to be in Ha’s situation right now.

    2. Rylee, I think you did a great job on your post. It seems very well thought out too. That was a well written great post. Its well written because it has a beginning that I love and an end that I love it was a great idea to put those in there. It was great because it was very meaningful, it was very meaningful because it tells us who you are a loving caring person (in my opinion).
      Great job!

  6. @ Rory, I never thought of bring my tablet. That would be a great idea because you would not miss out on anything and it would be fun to play the games and watch movies and do other things like that. But I was wondering how would you charge your tablet if there is no plug to plug your tablet in to charge it. But great idea anyway.

  7. I never thought of bringing my dog or cat before. If you are going to go some where for a long time might as well bring a friend. You could bring it a long and have fun with it while it won't be at home almost getting killed by a soldier (nice thinking about that). But it may become very skinny because it is not get enough food to fill it up. But at lest when you get of the ship you can get enough food for it and it won't die. Nice thinking about that blog post.

  8. @Olivia I never thought of bringing something like a pillow or a blanket like you did. I also never thought of all the memories I did with the stuffed animal I would bring on the ship. Nice thinking this week on the two post questions.

  9. @Mackenzie I wonder if my dog or cat would help me through my hard times. If someone helps you through hard times then this would be a great time for them to help you through hard times on the ship. I like this weeks commit and great think on that post.
