Week 2 Discussion Question

In the section called "Should We" the family has a meeting about whether they should stay in Vietnam or go now that the war is getting worse. Some of the family thinks they should stay, some of the family thinks they should go. Why would they want to leave? What could happen to them if they stay? Use specific examples from the story to support your thinking (especially from the section "Should We").

Make sure to write in complete sentences and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. I think that Ha’s family should go because then they will be in less danger if they are farther from the war. They should also go because they still don’t know if Ha’s father is alive. If they go maybe some people know news of Ha’s dad and they could possibly find him but if their dad comes back and notices his family was gone he wouldn’t know where they are. If they stay they could get hurt, killed, or captured by some soldiers. They would want to go because then they would have less of a chance of getting hurt.

  2. In the section called "Should We" the family has a meeting about whether they should stay in Vietnam or go now that the war is getting worse. Some of the family thinks they should stay, some of the family thinks they should go. if they go they will be safe from the war like no more soldiers patrolling the streets and after the war they could look for her father and escape with their family. If they stay they will be in danger of the war like the soldiers or maybe bombings maybe they get Ha’s father back but it would be harder to escape.

  3. I think they should stay because 1. I think they want to leave because their Mom thinks it’s hard for the kids because they can’t go jump roping outside after dark, soldiers will no longer patrol the neighborhood, and their Mom won’t have to push them under the bed. In the story their mom is always worrying, maybe if they move their mom will stop worrying.

    2. If Ha’s family stays then some of the soldiers could kick them out of their home. Their house could be bombed. They could also be shot by soldiers. Ha could never go back to school. Ha could stay with her Papaya tree, and Brother Khoi could stay with his chickens.

  4. @ Olivia I never thought of having the family move away help their mother stop worrying before. Maybe that will stop her from worrying. I also like that you used answers from the text to support the answers. Good job this week.

  5. I think some of the family would want to go because if they stay they could get hurt when they are outside of their home and even if they are inside their home. It would be a good idea to leave . The war Could get closer and closer to their home. This would be a big problem for the family in another way too. If they can’t go outside then no one can get food and other supplies and they could die of starvation. I think if they move out of Vietnam then the family can survive.

  6. What would happen is they were to leave? I think they should leave because the war is coming more closer and the war is beginning to be more dangerous and there will be less danger for her and her family and maybe she will find her father and if her father comes home when they left, he would’ve come all this way to try to find his family but they would be gone and her family wouldn’t be able to see their family when he came to their house and they were gone too. What could happen to them if they stay? If they stay, they will be in danger with the war comin’ there way and maybe there would be bombing and it would be harder for their father to try to look for them and it would be harder for them to escape from the war.
